Reshaped is Now Open-Source: A Game-Changer for Design Systems
I've been in the design and development space for over a decade, and I've seen my fair share of tools and libraries come and go. But every once in a while, something comes along that truly changes the game. And I believe we're at one of those moments with the recent announcement that Reshaped is now fully open-source.
For those of you who aren't familiar with it, Reshaped is a component library for both React and Figma that was created about five years ago. I've personally used Reshaped in a few of my own projects, and I can attest to its quality and thoughtfulness. It was built with a clear understanding of what a good design system should be, and what tends to go wrong in others.
What I've always appreciated about Reshaped is its focus on the core principles of web design. The creator noticed that about 80% of the web is built on the same foundational design practices. So, they set out to build a system that covers that 80%, while giving developers the flexibility to handle the last 20% with low-level utilities. It's a pragmatic approach that has saved me countless hours of work.
From Paid Product to Open-Source
To keep the project sustainable, Reshaped was initially a paid product. This allowed the creator to focus on supporting a smaller community and to really dive deep into every bug report and feature request. While I was happy to pay for the quality I was getting, I always hoped that one day it would be accessible to a wider audience.
That day has finally come. Two years ago, the first step was taken by making the React package free. And now, the entire Reshaped ecosystem – both the React library and the Figma library – is fully open-source. The source code is available on GitHub and the Figma library is available in the Figma Community.
Why This is a Big Deal
This is a huge leap of faith after five years of closed-source development, and it's a massive gift to the design and engineering communities. By making both libraries public, the creator is opening the door for us to see behind the scenes as new features are rolled out. Imagine being able to see how new Figma or React features are implemented in Reshaped before you even need to migrate your own company's design system. That's incredibly valuable.
I believe that Reshaped has the potential to become an industry standard for building design systems that are both scalable and minimal. It bridges the gap between design and engineering in a way that few other tools do. And now that it's open-source, the possibilities are endless.

What's Next for Reshaped?
The creator has assured us that the Reshaped component libraries will continue to grow. For those who purchased licenses in the past, you'll still get full access to future updates. And the conversation will continue through the same channels.
But that's not all. The creator is also interested in taking Reshaped further by introducing more complex, opinionated premium components on top of the core library. We're not talking about "50 landing page layouts," but advanced components that require sophisticated CSS and React logic. This is something I'm personally very excited about.
